All 23 Studio Ghibli Movies, Ranked from Worst to Best

Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio that is based in Tokyo, Japan, known for its unique filmmaking and artistry. It has existed for decades, founded on June 15, 1985, by Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao and producer Suzuki Toshio. You’ll find videos of creators making bacon and eggs from Howl’s Moving Castle or ramen from Ponyo. 23. ‘Earwig and the Witch’ (2020)
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu, Redbox
  • Directed by: Goro Miyazaki
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 29%

Earwig and the Witch was released in 2020 and is based on a book about an orphan who was clueless her mother possessed magical powers. It proved to be a disappointing movie due to its lack of focus and poor writing. This movie made audiences question whether or not Goro knew what it takes to make a Ghibli movie. The plot weaves through multiple threads but never brings them together. The low ratings this movie received make sense as the animation is stiff and fails to capture the traditional hand-drawn style of Studio Ghibli films. The lack of character development makes it difficult for viewers to follow Earwig’s journey and many of the other characters were viewed as unlikeable as well. The movie failed to provide the strong female leads that viewers expect from Studio Ghibli movies like Spirited Away or The Secret World of Arrietty. The relationships in the film are toxic and very contradictory to the typical healthy and uplifting connections in SG movies. Overall, the film suffers because it doesn’t provide the heartwarming and fantastic feeling audiences expect from Studio Ghibli.

22. ‘Tales from Earthsea’ (2006)
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu
  • Directed by: Goro Miyazaki
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 40%

This movie has been coined a “Goro dud” because it was simplistic and uncompelling, while Studio Ghibli is known for enticing content that contains themes of loss, love, and magic. Alone, it’s a fairly decent movie but in comparison to others, it doesn’t meet typical SG standards. The characters are two-dimensional and lack depth so where it’s hard to get invested in the plot. The characters have limited development throughout the movie, they’re almost like characters in stock images because they have no memorable traits or personalities. Tales from Earthsea was an adaptation of a complex book series by Ursula K. Le Guin. Most of the themes from the original series were lost in translation and changes to the story were made to the point of needing heavy reliance on special effects rather than staying in alignment with the original work. It had moments of beautiful landscapes and vibrant colors but lacked attention to detail in others, it ultimately didn’t pull viewers in—which led to unfavorable reviews.

21. ‘From Up on Poppy Hill’ (2011)
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu
  • Directed by: Goro Miyazaki
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87%

From Up on Poppy Hill is based on an 80s manga by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama. The movie received a great amount of praise for its visuals, warm atmosphere, and heartfelt storyline. The soundtrack received positive commentary as well for being relaxing and perfect for the atmosphere of the story. The two main characters are likable and viewers are able to get invested in their struggle with duty and personal feelings that so many young people face in their coming-of-age phases. It never reached the heights of other films in the studio’s output but it is still a heartwarming story about friendships, standing up for your beliefs, and learning how to let go. On this list, From Up on Poppy Hill marks the beginning of the unforgettable experience Studio Ghibli films are known for. However, some felt as though the movie lacked tension and was slow-paced with a melodramatic ending but overall is considered a success.

20. ‘Ocean Waves’ (1993)
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu
  • Directed by: Tomomi Mochizuki
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%

This movie received mixed responses. Some viewers praised it for capturing an accurate portrayal of adolescence while others felt it had poor plot development and animation. The story is about two high school friends who drifted apart over time. The movie beautifully captures the nuances of the teenage years and allows the viewers to feel a part of the character’s emotional journeys. There aren’t many plot twists or suspense to keep the viewers invested and the soundtrack doesn’t measure up compared to other movies. There are mixed reviews about the animation of the movie, some feel as though it’s satisfying with its muted colors and shading while others feel it is outdated and poorly drawn. Overall, the movie is aesthetically appealing and tells an emotional story that makes viewers want to watch it again.

19. ‘My Neighbors the Yamadas’ (1999)
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu
  • Directed by: Isao Takahata
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 78%

My Neighbors the Yamadas is considered a film that broke Studio Ghibli. However, it has been praised for its whimsical characters and perspective on family dynamics. The biggest critique is that the animation style is outdated and doesn’t compare to the animation of Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro. Viewers feel that the movie is relatable because of its portrayal of mundane family life but it doesn’t have much complexity and is too specific to its culture to where it’s not as accessible as other SG movies. The personalities of the characters are diverse and the movie explores how different dynamics can lead to the most heartwarming situations. It emphasizes the importance of communication and compassion. There are many thought-provoking moments as well, like when Matsuko has to find ways to manage her family’s finances and the movie explores different aspects of Japanese culture, and how different cultures interact with each other to create harmony. Ultimately, it creates an enjoyable experience because of its honesty and humor.

18. ‘The Cat Returns’ (2002)
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu
  • Directed by: Hiroyuki Morita
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88%

The Cat Returns is praised for its attention to detail and imagination. Viewers get lost in a fantasy world of humanoid cats and unique designs but also learn important lessons about courage, friendship, and appreciating the simplicity of life. Each character is unique and allows viewers to connect to their individual quirks and ways of maneuvering. The animation is breathtaking, the music is satisfying, and the story really comes to life because of its memorable characters. Some have viewed the movie as too childish to be enjoyable and that there are no real stakes, it’s overly simplistic but the praises seem to outweigh the critiques here because of its compelling narrative and fantastical element that beats many other SG movies. If you’re like me and find cats adorable, this movie is a must-watch.

17. ‘Pom Poko’ (1994)
Where to Watch: Max, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu
  • Directed by: Isao Takahata
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 86%

Pom Poko is an excellent movie, it does a great job of blending social commentary and comedy. The animation is smooth, with detailed designs and vibrant colors that bring each character to life. It tackles unique topics such as human-animal interaction, and environmental causes in a way that’s applicable to all ages. The likability of the characters makes it easy to root for them while they fight for their home. The soundtrack is extremely catchy and adds memorability to the overall experience. It can be difficult to develop a movie that appeals to both children and adults but Pom Poko does a decent job. Some think the movie doesn’t stand too tall compared to others in the Studio Ghibli catalog because it fails to tie together a moral/ethical significance. Nonetheless, it’s considered an enjoyable movie that has certainly earned its rating.

Upcoming Studio Ghibli Movies
‘The Boy and the Heron’ (2023)
Where to Watch: Theaters

At first, only Japanese audiences got to witness the return of Studio Ghibli on big screens when the newly produced film How Do You Live? (Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka) debuted on July 14, 2023. First announced on Twitter via the studio’s official profile, this new movie (which is promised to be the final Studio Ghibli presentation, sadly…) built up tons of intrigue as it landed in theaters without any trailers and promotional marketing whatsoever.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that when speaking to a Japanese magazine called Bungei Shunji, Studio Ghibli lead producer Toshio Suzuki had this to say about the decision to go that route for the movie’s Japanese launch – “As part of company operations, over the years Ghibli has wanted people to come see the movies we’ve made. So we’ve thought about that and done a lot of different things for that purpose — but this time we were like, ‘Eh, we don’t need to do that.”

It’s apparent that that sentiment isn’t shared with Studio Ghibli fans living in the States, however. A trailer for this anime blockbuster has been released for American audiences and those same moviegoers will get to see what all the hype is about now that this film (which has been renamed The Boy and the Heron) has been slated to hit American theaters on December 8, 2023. The plot of this movie is centered around a young boy named Mahito Maki (Santoki), who discovers an abandoned tower in his new town and ends up entering a fantastical realm that plays host to a talking grey heron.

For those living in Japan, the marquee mobile game that has captured millions of players’ attention and regularly garners tons of attention is Granblue Fantasy. This fantastical action RPG, which comes from the development house known as Cygames, utilizes a gorgeous painterly art style mixed in with anime stylings, a lovable cast of characters, and fine-tuned traditional turn-based combat mechanics. Back in 2020, Granblue Fantasy grew into a recognizable global IP after the release of Granblue Fantasy: Versus. Arc System Works (the legendary Japanese development studio that’s best known for creating the Guilty Gear series) offered its expertise in the sub-genre of anime fighters to craft a quality brawler. Sadly, a less-than-stellar netcode hampered the game’s growth among the FGC (Fighting Game Community) and kept it from being a lot bigger. Now Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is not only looking to greatly improve upon its predecessor’s netcode, but it’s also looking to improve upon its combat mechanics, spruce up its graphical presentation, and so much more. Now let’s take a look at Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising’s release date, story, characters, etc.

Gameplay

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will come with a host of notable improvements in several areas. The suite of modes included here features Arcade, Story, Online Matches (Ranked Matches, Casual Matches, and Room Matches fall underneath that mode), Journal (which provides background information on the game’s lore, art, and music), Figure Studio (which lets you create scenes with character figurines, and Training (which includes Frame Information, Character Breakdowns, Combo Practice, and Situational Training).

Speaking of online avatars, players can now participate in a dedicated online battle royale mode called “Grand Bruise Legends!” That mode comes with two games: a free-for-all obstacle course challenge called “Rising Royale” and a team-based game called “Gold Brick Hoarder” that’s centered around collecting as many gold bricks as possible.

Cygames

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising features a host of combat adjustments that lend themself well to longer combo strings and varied approaches to closing in on your opponent. “Ultimate Skill” moves are even more powerful versions of the original game’s EX versions (“Plus Skills”) of special moves. Ultimate Skills are capable of slowing down the fight for a quick second while you continue stringing together follow-up attacks. A “Dash Attack” is exactly what it is – a move that can be pulled off while dashing.

A “Triple Attack” is an auto combo that be pulled off by pressing the same button three times in a row – the third attack during that string can be changed to an overhead or low attack depending on your final button input. “Skybound Arts” and “Super Skybound Arts” make their return from the first game, which are super moves and more powerful climactic versions of those super moves. “Raging Strike” attacks are powerful moves that can’t be blocked, cause guard crush, and deplete a “Bravery Point” from your opponent. A “Raging Chain” attack is an additional follow-up attack that comes right after successfully landing a Raging Strike. Finally, a “Brave Counter” is a counterattack that can be pulled off while blocking a foe’s attack or during a guard crush.

The brand says that you can begin to see a reduction in fine lines in as early as 20 minutes, with an overall improvement in smoother more plump skin. The only negative is that you’re spending $30 on one mask and it can be difficult to keep up with as far as a daily routine if you don’t have budget to invest in a lot at one time. We recommend using this mask occasionally in addition to your normal neck cream if that is the case.

What to look for in a neck cream, according to a dermatologist:

“The skin on the neck is thinner and has fewer oil glands, therefore it is prone to dryness,” says Dr. Naana Boakye MD MPH, adding: “There it is important to find a neck cream that has moisturizing ingredients i.e. squalene, glycerin, shea butter, pro-aging benefits ie peptides, vitamin C and E ferulic acid and a bonus would be SPF. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant that helps with collagen production and hyperpigmentation. Vitamin E and ferulic acid help reduce oxidative stress.”

How we found the best neck creams:

“The key to finding a great neck cream is to read the labels rather than base it on marketing, and to look for key ingredients such as squalene, glycerin, shea butter, pro-aging and vitamin C and E while browsing through products,” the dermatologist explains.

FAQs about neck creams:

Here are frequently asked questions about neck creams, and the dermatologist’s responses.

Do neck creams work?

“Yes. There are a lot of clinical studies that suggest that neck creams are effective to help improve hydration and improve elasticity. However, it all depends on the formulation.”

Should I use a neck cream?

“Yes. Everyone should use one because the aging process begins in your late 20s.”

When should I start using a neck cream?

“The aging process begins in your late 20s, so this is when you should begin to start using neck creams.”

The 25 Best Prince Fashion Moments, and The Eras That Went With Them

It’s now been seven years since we’ve lost the revolutionary Purple One. While Prince is obviously renowned for his legendary music career becoming an icon in the 1980s along with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Madonna to name a few, he is equally recognized and respected for his iconic sense of style. Mr. Purple Rain donned many impactful outfits through the course of his thirty-plus years in the entertainment industry, instantly setting himself apart from the rest from his arrival on the scene in 1978. Today we’re going to be taking a look at his best fashion moments and the respective eras that went along with them.

In addition to that groundbreaking fashion sense, Prince also rocked many different hairstyles to accompany those individual eras. From long flowing waves to short pixie cuts with highlights, Purple P never disappointed and always looked impeccable. And as for his style, nearly all of his pieces were custom made solely for him, meaning that you won’t ever be able to find a duplicate because there was only one ever made. That said, here are our top Prince fashion moments.

RELATED: The 20 Best Prince Songs Ever, Ranked

1. The Afro
Getty Images

We first met Prince in 1978 as a 20-year-old with his debut studio album Soft and Wet. With that debut also came luxurious silky afro that was poofed to perfection. Even back then Prince never had a hair out of place, giving us one of the most symmetrically perfect afros we’ve ever seen. Shoutout to that leather jacket too—it was smooth.

2. American Bandstand (1979)

About a year later Prince made one of his first national television appearances on American Bandstand. For the performance of his first major hit “ I Wanna Be Your Lover,” Prince wore a satin long sleeve shirt, and gold lame pants for what’s now considered a classic moment. We’ve also got to call out the hair again—look at that blow out and those curls.

3. Controversy Album Cover (1981)
Warner Bros

Enter the jerry curl. Everybody who was somebody had a jerry curl at some point in the 1980s, and Prince hopped on the trend relatively early. While Controversy wasn’t his breakout album (that would come the following year with 1999), the cover captured attention with Prince wearing a taupe sequin jacket over top of a tuxedo vest and tie. 1981 was also the first year (at least from a national standpoint) where we saw Prince rocking his signature heavy eyeliner.

4. Prince in Concert (1981)
Getty Images

Only Prince could have gotten away with an outfit like this and only he could have made it iconic. Look at it—the man is wearing a bandana in place of a shirt, thong underwear, and thigh high boots. We do have to add that Prince originally started the performance with a green ensemble (still no pants though), but eventually decided that the shirt wasn’t needed.

5. Prince Purple Rain Outfit (1984)
Getty Images

Purple Rain is what officially catapulted Prince to mega-superstar status with its legendary songs and accompanying movie. It was also this era that people would forever begin associating Prince with the color purple. No other artist can claim purple as their identity now, and nobody will ever forget the many different variations of his glittery purple sequin jacket.

6. Prince in Concert (1984)
Getty Images

And even though Purple was his signature color, let’s forget instances like these where he would bust out the red velvet. You know what? That’s exactly what we’re going to call this outfit—The Red Velvet.

7. Raspberry Beret (1985)

“Raspberry Beret…I think I loveee herrrr.” Most people have “Raspberry Beret” as top ten or fifteen in their greatest Prince songs list, but let’s not forget the outfit he wore in the video. The blue suit with white clouds matched the sky blue background and contrasted well with his white guitar.

8. Parade Era (1986)
Getty Images

Leave it to Prince to go in a completely different direction than expected. By the time 1986 rolled around, the then 28-year-old was far removed from his Purple Rain persona, making it clear that he didn’t want to get stuck in a cycle where he was doing the same thing over and over again. For his Parade tour and album, Prince took on a smooth, suave modern-day 1950s look, ditching his rockstar outfits for oversized suits, and switching the jerry curl to a slicked-back short haircut.

9. Mountains Video (1986)

During that same era we also videos like “Mountains,” which showed off his epic creativity and style. The outfit donned in this video looks like a work of art with Prince wearing a huge hat and blazer that so retro 80s but still very much in line with recent couture trends.

10. Sign ‘o’ The Times “Nerdy” Era (1987)
Getty Images

The 1950s look, however, didn’t last very long, as Prince opted for a “nerdy rockstar” style to go along with the release of his newest album Sign ‘o’ The Times, which was released in 1987.

11. Sign ‘o’ The Times Video (1987)

The curls. The glasses. The turtleneck paired with the leather jacket—Prince very much had a way of making simple look cooler than cool (and cooler than what we would look if we tried to wear the same thing).

12. Alphabet St. Video (1988)

Definitely have to callout the green polka dot blouse and the high-waisted pants with the word Prince on the sign in the “Alphabet St.” video. The ankle boots he was wearing were fire too.

13. Batman Era (1989)
Getty Images

Fast forward to 1989, Prince was back to his long luscious waves and glittery outfits during the course of his Batman Soundtrack promotional campaign. He continued to sport a similar look in the year 1990, which also included him starring in the film Graffiti Bridge.

14. Graffiti Bridge (1990)

The fashion donned in Graffiti Bridge was and still is underrated. One of these days we’ll have to outline it in full because when we say it was epic—it was epic.

15. VMA’s (1991)
Getty Images

Ah, the good ole assless chaps. Everything about Prince’s performance at the 1991 VMA’s tested the limits of early 90s broadcast television. For starters, Prince was performing his hit single “Gett Off,” which is about… never mind you guys are gonna have to listen to it. The lyrics alone probably had the men in suits at the VMA headquarters wincing, and I’d have to imagine that their anxiety got even worse when they saw his stage set up and background (again you have to see for yourself).

If their blood pressure was already rising at the beginning of the performance, they probably had a full meltdown when Prince turned around and revealed his…bare butt cheeks. To this day, Prince’s costume is still talked about whenever classic VMA moments are revisited.

Sidenote: Take a look at the sign Prince flashes at the end of this performance. Wild.

16. Random Prince Photo (1993)
Getty Images

I’m including this because the year 1993 for Prince was a transformative one—not just in style but personally and professionally as well. During this time, Prince began going by an unpronounceable symbol (which was a blend of the male and female gender signs) that would often be worn on his clothes, in the background of his performances, and branded on his albums. You see, it was this era where Prince began battling his record label Warner Bros. for the rights to his masters. As such, Prince quit going by the name “Prince,” and began only using the unpronounceable symbol.

However, since the symbol was unpronounceable, if you were talking about him, let’s just say on tv, you would have to refer to him as “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince.” The symbol stuck with Prince for the remainder of his life (even after he went back to using his name) and in the years since his fans have started using the symbol in their profile pictures, have had it tattooed onto them, and have essentially made it their own too.

17. Short Hair Era (1994)
Getty Images

You know how it is when you’re going through a rough time—you cut all of your hair off. That’s exactly what Prince did in the mid-1990s when he chopped the bouffant he had been rocking the previous year, into a shortcut with a bang. His style also became noticeably darker, with the incorporation of a lot of black into his wardrobe. Prince would pretty much keep slightly different variations of this look for the next four years, even dying it a lighter brown color in 1997.

18. Prince Performance (1998)

Enjoy this video of Prince looking super fly in a leather get up and black shades during this 1998 performance.

19. Prince and the Plaits (1998)

Also during the year 1998, Prince decided he was going to begin rocking what we’ll call the “Spice Girl Plaits.” This interview is a representation of Prince fashion to the fullest with the plaits, the elaborate coat, the shades, the bangles, and the hoop earrings on one ear and ear jewelry on the other. Classic Prince.

20. Prince at a Basketball Game (1998)
Getty Images

Because only Prince would show up to a basketball game with an all-glitter top, matching trousers, matching boots, and a pimp cane.

21. Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic Era (2000)

This is hands down my personal favorite Prince-style era for quite a few reasons. First of all, it was around this time that he finally came to a resolution with Warner Bros. in regards to the rights/ownership of his music. This resulted in Prince looking much happier overall, and it was reflected in his look and style.

Prince emerged into the new millennium having grown that light brown haircut he got in 97 past his shoulders, and with minimal makeup, looking a slightly more mature version of his 1989-1990 self. He was also still very much a fashion trendsetter, opting to wear only one big hoop earring instead of two, kicking off a new craze. Make no mistake, this is grown and sexy Prince.

22. Prince Circa 2000

Oh you know—just another video of Prince looking cool as hell during the year 2000.

23. People’s Choice Awards (2005)
Getty Images

Whenever anyone talks about Prince’s best style moments, this is always included. I’m not sure how exactly to describe this other than angelic. Only Prince could pull off a fit like this, and the response of the crowd still proved the power that he possessed more than twenty years into his career.

24. Prince (2009)
Getty Images
Prince in 2009

In my opinion, Prince did an excellent job maturing his style. It was still very “Prince,” and very “Rockstar,” but at no point did it look like he was trying to hold onto the younger variations of himself. The sharp suits and short cut were a very smooth look.

25. Prince Final Years (2013-2016)
Getty Images
Prince in 2014

In what may or may not be ironic, Prince ended his life fashion-wise the same way he started—with a 1970s afro and bohemian style, which was similar to how he looked when he released his debut album For You in 1978. Life truly is full circle.

Chicago has been holding down the No. 1 spot as America’s third most populous city for a minute. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Windy City has housed more than a few of the most influential musicians to ever touch a stage. The likes of Quincy Jones, Chaka Khan, Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole and Herbie Hancock aren’t the only Chi-Town icons in existence. Chicago has also bred several hip-hop G.O.A.T.s. Chicago has played a major role in shaping what modern hip-hop music and culture looks and feels like. From ushering in drill music to being a hub for super more conscious, lyrical, backpack type rap to birthing some of music’s biggest superstars, Chicago has been a force to be reckoned with. But who are the best Chicago rappers of all time?

Terrence J’s Next Journey Is Empowering HBCU Culture

Terrence J has many different talents all in one—a media guru, actor, activist, ambassador, and more. Many of us were introduced to him in 2006 as one of the hosts on BET’s 106 & Park, where he remained until 2012. You may have also met him through E! News where he was a co-anchor from 2012 to 2015. In the years since, Terrence J has expanded into the acting world with film credits to his name like Stomp The Yard: Homecoming (2010), Think Like A Man (2012), Think Like A Man Too (2014), Baggage Claim (2013), The Perfect Match (2016) and more. He’s also hosted MTV’s reality television series Are You The One? and Power’s official after-show Power Confidential. The resume keeps expanding, but there’s something else that is very near and dear to Terrence J’s heart—expanding and promoting HBCU culture, an initiative he’s currently fulfilling through a nationwide HBCU Homecoming Tour in partnership with Pronghorn. We caught up with him last week to talk about all things HBCU.

RELATED: 14 HBCU Hoodies You Can Purchase for University Season

Terrence J

An HBCU is who really took a chance on me. I didn’t have great grades and I was on academic probation. By the time I graduated, I had a 3.7 GPA, I was a student body president, and member of Omega Psi Phi.

Before all of the success, Terrence J attended North Carolina A&T State University where he was the Student Government Association President, a DJ for North Carolina A&T’s radio station, and a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity (he was initiated to the Mu Psi chapter in Spring 2004). Without North Carolina A&T State University, Mr. Terrence J says he wouldn’t be the man he is today. “I enrolled in an HBCU in 2000,” he tells ONE37pm. “People told me don’t go there—it’s a secondary education and the schools weren’t as good. I heard of all these things but for me, an HBCU is who really took a chance on me. I didn’t have great grades and I was on academic probation. By the time I graduated, I had a 3.7 GPA, I was a student body president and member of Omega Psi Phi. My time at an HBCU changed my life.”

The matriculation, getting excellent mentors, multiple internship and job experiences, and meeting the professors that invested the extra time in him are all elements Terrence J credits as helping him be where he is today both personally and professionally. “It changed my outlook as a Black person,” he says adding: “It changed me as a man and my outlook as a productive member of the community.” The mantra of HBCU’s he continues is about giving back, and now the multi-hyphenate is returning the knowledge, game, and blessings to current collegiate students and young adults across the nation.

Pronghorn

Terrence J

We spend millions of dollars on spirits but don’t have the representation, that’s why I partnered with Pronghorn.

This inaugural program with Pronghorn launched at Howard University in Washington, D.C on October 19th, stopped at Spelman and Morehouse in Atlanta last week, and is descending upon North Carolina A&T tonight to bring wealth tools, mentorship resources, and recruitment opportunities to thousands of Black students this fall. “I’ve gone to many homecomings in my time, and one of the key ingredients to having a good time—whether you’re going to the club, cookout, tailgating, etc., is to make sure your spirits and cup are full. What I noticed over time is that no matter which HBCU I went to, it had people and ownership that didn’t look like us. We spend millions of dollars on spirits but don’t have the representation, that’s why I partnered with Pronghorn as they have multiple initiatives that speak to that in terms of diversity, getting those internship and mentorship opportunities, landing job, funding, and more.”

Each year, more and more young Black students are making the decision to enroll in HBCUs, and that includes collegiate-bound athletes who have previously been told going to an HBCU is something that will hinder their professional opportunities. According to a recent article from the HBCU Career Center, new data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that HBCU enrollment has increased by 7 percent between 2020 and 2023 compared to a 14 percent increase between 1976 and 2021 alone. So I asked Terrence J if the individualized attention Black students receive from HBCUs is increased compared to non-HBCU’s. “Oh 100 percent,” he remarks. “I grew up around a lot of different people, but I didn’t have a real understanding of my people when I came out of high school.

A lot of high schools don’t speak to the Black experience. The topic of slavery is a couple of days, they don’t break down The Civil Rights Movement, Jim Crow, and segregation all the way to Black Lives Matter. When you go to an HBCU, it’s all about the Black experience from the people that you meet—because you’re going to meet people from all across the country. I remember meeting a classmate that was from Tulsa, Oklahoma—I didn’t know what the Tulsa Massacre was about until I met that classmate. I didn’t grow up in an affluent neighborhood so I didn’t know what Jack & Jill was. I didn’t even know what fraternities or sororities were about when I graduated high school! You’re going to meet so many different people, professors, and deans that are going to change your life. The experiences you are going to have are like none other.”

Pronghorn

Terrence J

When I pledged a fraternity and got to meet Black brothas from all over the world they changed my perspective

Terrence names influential figures like Deion Sanders and Will Packer among the individuals who have helped elevate and take the promotion and publicity of HBCUs to the next level to get great recruits, and Mr. J himself has been quite busy during this homecoming season. “I’m doing 30 days of HBCU homecomings—I’ve been on the road like 25 days hitting schools from Mississippi, Alabama, Hampton, and Atlanta to talk to students about HBCUs—this tour with Pronghorn really speaks to what HBCU pride, entrepreneurship, and collaboration is all about.” A quick look at his Instagram account will show you just how busy he’s been and what a time it’s been.

Having accomplished the things he has in his career puts Terrence J in a unique position of now being able to extend a hand down. Knowing he’s now in a situation where he can influence others, I asked Terrence who/what made the most impact on him during his collegiate years. “Oh my God—probably my fraternity brothers and my frat line,” he tells me continuing: “They changed my life! I never met my biological father—my stepdad is Hispanic—I grew up in a half-Black and half-Hispanic household so I didn’t really have a Black man in my life during those formative years to talk to me about the experience of being a Black man. When I pledged a fraternity and got to meet Black brothas from all over the world they changed my perspective. The pillars of Omega Psi Phi, the pillars of what we are, the camaraderie and competition between us and other Black fraternities—it changed me.”

After college, Terrence J’s rise was quite quick with BET’s 106 & Park being what introduced him on a national level, and the ascension increased from there. It wasn’t too long after handling hosting duties that he found himself immersed in the world of acting. “I remember the day I was at 106 & Park and said I wanted to movies. Will Packer, who went to a completely different HBCU, (Florida A&M University aka FAMU) is the one who told me about the audition for Think Like A Man. Steve Harvey is my fraternity brother, Taraji P. Henson and Lance Gross went to Howard—I met so many people in my early career in the industry that went to HBCU’s that helped mentor me in the space and give me opportunities. All of that was life-changing, and I’d say one out of every ten meetings I’m going to meet someone who pulls me aside and is like “Clark Atlanta Pride!”—it’s a community.

While there might be a competition during the school years, when it’s time to come out it’s all about collaboration, working together, and partnering with each other. Speaking of events that bring you together, unfortunately, not everybody will have the opportunity to get this wisdom in person. For those unable to attend Terrence J’s tour stop, here are three things he plans on covering:

  • “We’ll start with the liquids. Ten To One is an incredible brand that’s owned by Ciara, but you would never know that! So I want to talk about brands like Ten To One, IslandJon Vodka, Greenwood Whiskey, and more.
  • “Next I’m going to talk about the opportunities—there’s over 1800 jobs that are going to be created by Pronghorn over the next ten years and their initiatives. I want to see more and more sistas and brothas get into this multi-billion dollar industry and profit from our knowledge.
  • “Third and final thing—we’re going to have fun! When we come to your school we’re going to have a great time and it’s going to be all about the HBCU experience and pride.

And if you happen to meet Terrence J at one of his tour stops, while randomly out and about, or wherever fate decides, what’s going to catch his attention to be able to use him as a resume reference? “It’s all about passion, determination, and hunger but the biggest thing is collaboration. I was born to work with people that are collaborative—it’s not about an individual thing it’s about community. It’s not about “me,” it’s about “us,” and we’re looking for people right now. We’re looking for interns, people we can mentor in this industry, owners, entrepreneurs, and people with big ideas.”

You heard the man. It’s all about collaboration.

You can continue to keep up with Terrence J. via Instagram.

WCW Champions: The 10 Greatest World Heavyweight Champions, Ranked

Hey Yo! It’s The Wrestling Classic here with another list for ONE37pm. This time, we’re going to have a little bit of fun as I get to reminisce about my childhood and talk about something I remember fondly, World Championship Wrestling. My earliest memories of watching wrestling live are watching both WWF and WCW. I’ll always have a soft spot for WCW due to my nostalgia for its signature brand of professional wrestling “where the big boys play.” For this latest piece, I’m going rank the 10 greatest WCW Champions of all time when it comes to the company’s top prize – the World Heavyweight Championship.

First things first, though – I want to mention some facts and criteria for this list before I start. The first thing I want to educate people on is that WCW officially recognized the WCW World Championship in January 1991 when Ric Flair defeated Sting, separating themselves from the NWA World Championship lineage. There were 22 WCW Champions in its 10-year run since that pivotal moment in the company’s history.

Another thing I want to make clear is that I’ll only be considering the championship reigns that happened in WCW from 1991-2001 before WWE purchased the company. Therefore, The Rock, Chris Jericho, and Kurt Angle weren’t considered for inclusion in this list. My decisions are based on the significance of the superstars’ reign or reigns with the title. There were a lot of short reigns and the title did change hands quite a bit, so I really want to focus on the champions that truly elevated the title while they held it.

RELATED: The Best WCW Wrestlers of All Time

Honorable Mentions

Kevin Nash

Jeff Jarrett

Scott Steiner

Bret Hart

The Giant

David Arquette (for infamous reasons, of course)

10. Diamond Dallas Page
WWE

Diamond Dallas Page is a three-time WCW World Champion, holding the title for only 30 combined days. DDP’s popularity hit immense levels during his run as the “People’s Champion” of WCW. When he first made his debut in the company, he was a manager who eventually grew into a mid-card guy (however, he didn’t get too far at first due to the abundance of props that went along with his over-the-top gimmick). However, the fans were along for the ride with DDP as he rose up to the ranks to become the World Heavyweight Champion.

Page first won the belt at WCW Spring Stampede 1999 in a Four Way Dance that featured Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Sting. He would go on to lose the title to Sting a couple of weeks later on an episode of WCW Monday Nitro, only for Page to win it back the very same night in another Four Way Dance. Page would eventually win the title again from Jeff Jarrett in 2000, only to lose it to David Arquette the very next night. However, anytime Page won the title, it felt like the people also won and that’s what makes him one of the greatest WCW Champions of all time.

9. Lex Luger
WWE

The “Total Package” Lex Luger is a two-time World Heavyweight Champion with a combined 235 days as the titleholder during his reigns. He first won the title in 1991 when he was originally set up as the number-one contender for Ric Flair’s belt. Flair shockingly left the company for WWF, so Luger ended up facing and defeating Barry Windham in a Steel Cage match for the vacant World Title at the 1991 Great American Bash. He then went on to hold the title for nearly seven months until he lost it to Sting.

Luger’s second reign is unforgettable since he shocked the world by defeating “Hollywood” Hogan on an episode of WCW Monday Nitro, ending his reign of terror during the peak of the nWo era. Hogan was actually days away from holding the title hostage for an entire year, so it was a major victory for WCW during a period where they were dominated by the heel stable on a regular basis. The WCW locker room collective came out to celebrate with Luger in the ring, which resulted in an unforgettable sight (even though the reign would only last five days before Hogan won it back, sadly).

8. Ron Simmons
WWE

Ron Simmons made history as the first-ever African-American World Champion in a nationally recognized wrestling company in 1992. WCW was the number two company in comparison to the WWF at the time – Vince McMahon’s wrestling empire would actually wait another six years until they contemplated putting their World Championship on a black superstar. Vader had just recently defeated the “Stinger” for the title. Sting had suffered an injury so he wasn’t able to compete in his rematch, so WCW had a raffle to see who would challenge Vader, which Simmons had won.

Although there was a lot of doubt as to Simmons coming out on top, WCW shocked the world when it actually showcased Simmons triumphing over Vader and winning the championship. He would hold the championship for 150 days during his single historic reign. The historical significance of this title win and the length of his reign classify Simmons as one of the best WCW Champions of all time.

7. “Macho Man” Randy Savage
WWE

The “Macho Man” Randy Savage is one of the biggest names in professional wrestling and a pop culture icon. “The King of Madness” would win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on four occasions with only 53 combined days as champion. He would initially win the vacated title during the 1995 World War III Battle Royal. The feud he would go on to have with Ric Flair during his first run would see him lose and win the championship back, making him a two-time champion. This rivalry was a money-making draw for the company, which makes it significant since this was prior to the popular nWo angle.

Savage would win the title on two more occasions from that point forward. In 1998, Savage defeated Sting for the championship. Then in 1999, Savage went on to defeat Kevin Nash for the strap. Savage actually dropped the WCW World Heavyweight Championship to Hogan on both occasions the following night after winning it, which is quite a dubious record. Even still, Savage’s runs with the belt make him eligible for making this list of the best WCW champions.

6. Booker T
WWE

Booker T is a five-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion with 253 combined days as champion. Booker T is a perfect example of a homegrown star who was built up strongly before he finally got his hands on the WCW’s top prize. Similar to DDP, the WCW fans followed Booker’s journey from his early days spent in the tag team division as one half of Harlem Heat to becoming a main event superstar. Booker won the championship for the first time from Jeff Jarrett at the end of a controversial Bash at the Beach 2000.

He would go on to win the championship on three more occasions. He defeated Kevin Nash to win the belt back. He beat “Double J” for the vacated title in the overly gimmicky San Francisco 49ers Match after he originally lost the title to Vince Russo. Finally, Booker went on to beat Scott Steiner on the final WCW Monday Nitro to walk into the WWF as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion and United States Champion. That final reign carried over into his WWF run where he lost the title and then won it right back from Kurt Angle. Seeing as how Booker ran with the belt during WCW’s final days and emerged on WWE TV with the “Big Gold” around his waits, he’s definitely considered by many as one of the best WCW champions.

5. Goldberg
WWE

WCW was frequently criticized for not creating new stars and relying on stars made popular in the WWF/E or elsewhere like Japan. However, Goldberg, DDP, and Booker T are three perfect examples of stars WCW made. Goldberg only had one reign as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, which lasted 174 days. The organic rise of Goldberg is one of those wrestling formulas often replicated (Ryback and Jade Cargill, for example), but never duplicated. Goldberg was quickly becoming a main event star and a championship contender by being undefeated in over 100 matches.

This eventually led to him being granted a title shot in July 1998 against Hogan. However, there were extra stipulations added to that epic first-time meeting. Goldberg actually defeated Hogan in front of 40,000 fans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, cementing his legacy. He would remain undefeated until ultimately being screwed out of the title after losing to Kevin Nash (who used the assistance of Scott Hall and a taser) at Starrcade 1998. It’s an unforgettable moment in WCW history, though!

4. “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan
WWE

Hulk Hogan in name value alone brought a lot of significance to the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Hogan is a globally known megastar and a pop culture icon known far & wide. The “Hulkster” would hold the championship on six occasions from 1994 to 2000 for a combined 1,117 days. Hogan’s initial reign after defeating Ric Flair in 1994 was plagued with bad storylines and really wasn’t the draw WCW expected it to be, sadly. However, when Hogan turned heel and defeated The Giant for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, things changed for the better. Hogan went on to win the championship on three more occasions during the nWo’s boom period.

“Hollywood” Hogan won the title back five days after losing it to Lex Luger, beat Randy Savage for the belt the night after Savage won it from Sting at Spring Stampede 1998, and then won it again during the infamous “Fingerpoke of Doom” moment from Kevin Nash. Hogan’s last reign would come at Savage’s expense again in 1999, winning it from him a day after Savage beat Nash at Bash at the Beach 1999. Hogan was always sniffing around that title picture and definitely looked cool as hell with the nWo spray-painted version of the belt, which classifies him as one of the finest WCW champions of all time.

3. Sting
WWE

The “Stinger” was a franchise player and pretty much the face of World Championship Wrestling during his run there. Sting captured the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on six occasions, holding it for 250 combined days. Sting won his first WCW Championship against Lex Luger in 1992 at SuperBrawl II and started his second reign by defeating Big Van Vader at a house show in London in 1993. It would be four years before the “Icon” would win the championship again. That next title win would cap off his unforgettable and over-a-year-long feud with the nWo (specifically Hogan) at Starrcade 1997. Sting went on to become a four-time champion after the belt was vacated due to the controversial finish at Starrcade, only to become champion once again by beating Hogan at SuperBrawl VIII. Sting’s fifth reign would only last a day when he defeated DDP on Nitro in 1999. Sting’s final reign would also be at Hogan’s expense at Fall Brawl 1999. Sting epitomizes WCW and will forever be recognized as one of the greatest WCW champions of all time.

2. Big Van Vader
WWE

WCW’s lack of direction and unpredictable booking made the WCW World Heavyweight Championship change hands a lot in the later years. There were 25 World Title changes in the year 2000 alone! There was constant chaos when it came to booking the main title. It’s pretty insane to fathom how it had been vacated on 12 occasions during its ten-year history. Big Van Vader makes it this high on this list because of just how consistent his reigns were. Vader is a three-time WCW Champion, holding the title for 377 combined days.

He initially won the championship from Sting at the Great American Bash in 1992. The first reign was cut short due to an injury, but the company saved face by having Vader drop the belt to Ron Simmons. Vader would return to win the title back from Simmons four months later. The big man would lose the title to Sting in London during a European tour but would win it back six days later in Ireland. Vader’s third and final reign went on for 285 days until he lost it to Ric Flair at Starrcade 1993. Vader will always get tons of respect from wrestling fans the world over due to him being one of WCW’s most dominant and consistent champions.

1. Ric Flair
WWE

The greatest WCW Champion of all time is none other than the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Flair would hold the championship on eight occasions for a total of 505 days. Flair was the initial WCW Champion when they separated from the NWA to finally recognize their World Title as the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Flair would not lose the championship during his first reign as he left to join the WWF. Flair started his second reign as the official WCW World Heavyweight Champion in December of 1993 by beating Vader in a career-threatening match at Starrcade 1993. Flair’s third reign would come after the belt was vacated due to a controversial finish in a match with Ricky Steamboat.

Flair would win the rematch to become champion once again. Flair’s fourth and fifth reign happened during his memorable feud with Randy Savage in 1996. The sixth title reign would come from “Naitch” after he finally defeated Hogan in a cage match in 1999. Flair’s seventh reign came from beating Jarrett on WCW Monday Nitro and the eighth reign came when Nash literally just handed his title to Flair in the year 2000. At the end of the day, if you mention the WCW World Heavyweight Championship or the Big Gold Championship Title, Flair is the first image or name that comes to mind. It’s why he’s considered the greatest WCW World Champion of all time.
