Earwig and the Witch was released in 2020 and is based on a book about an orphan who was clueless her mother possessed magical powers. It proved to be a disappointing movie due to its lack of focus and poor writing. This movie made audiences question whether or not Goro knew what it takes to make a Ghibli movie. The plot weaves through multiple threads but never brings them together. The low ratings this movie received make sense as the animation is stiff and fails to capture the traditional hand-drawn style of Studio Ghibli films. The lack of character development makes it difficult for viewers to follow Earwig’s journey and many of the other characters were viewed as unlikeable as well. The movie failed to provide the strong female leads that viewers expect from Studio Ghibli movies like Spirited Away or The Secret World of Arrietty. The relationships in the film are toxic and very contradictory to the typical healthy and uplifting connections in SG movies. Overall, the film suffers because it doesn’t provide the heartwarming and fantastic feeling audiences expect from Studio Ghibli.

This movie has been coined a “Goro dud” because it was simplistic and uncompelling, while Studio Ghibli is known for enticing content that contains themes of loss, love, and magic. Alone, it’s a fairly decent movie but in comparison to others, it doesn’t meet typical SG standards. The characters are two-dimensional and lack depth so where it’s hard to get invested in the plot. The characters have limited development throughout the movie, they’re almost like characters in stock images because they have no memorable traits or personalities. Tales from Earthsea was an adaptation of a complex book series by Ursula K. Le Guin. Most of the themes from the original series were lost in translation and changes to the story were made to the point of needing heavy reliance on special effects rather than staying in alignment with the original work. It had moments of beautiful landscapes and vibrant colors but lacked attention to detail in others, it ultimately didn’t pull viewers in—which led to unfavorable reviews.

From Up on Poppy Hill is based on an 80s manga by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama. The movie received a great amount of praise for its visuals, warm atmosphere, and heartfelt storyline. The soundtrack received positive commentary as well for being relaxing and perfect for the atmosphere of the story. The two main characters are likable and viewers are able to get invested in their struggle with duty and personal feelings that so many young people face in their coming-of-age phases. It never reached the heights of other films in the studio’s output but it is still a heartwarming story about friendships, standing up for your beliefs, and learning how to let go. On this list, From Up on Poppy Hill marks the beginning of the unforgettable experience Studio Ghibli films are known for. However, some felt as though the movie lacked tension and was slow-paced with a melodramatic ending but overall is considered a success.

This movie received mixed responses. Some viewers praised it for capturing an accurate portrayal of adolescence while others felt it had poor plot development and animation. The story is about two high school friends who drifted apart over time. The movie beautifully captures the nuances of the teenage years and allows the viewers to feel a part of the character’s emotional journeys. There aren’t many plot twists or suspense to keep the viewers invested and the soundtrack doesn’t measure up compared to other movies. There are mixed reviews about the animation of the movie, some feel as though it’s satisfying with its muted colors and shading while others feel it is outdated and poorly drawn. Overall, the movie is aesthetically appealing and tells an emotional story that makes viewers want to watch it again.

My Neighbors the Yamadas is considered a film that broke Studio Ghibli. However, it has been praised for its whimsical characters and perspective on family dynamics. The biggest critique is that the animation style is outdated and doesn’t compare to the animation of Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro. Viewers feel that the movie is relatable because of its portrayal of mundane family life but it doesn’t have much complexity and is too specific to its culture to where it’s not as accessible as other SG movies. The personalities of the characters are diverse and the movie explores how different dynamics can lead to the most heartwarming situations. It emphasizes the importance of communication and compassion. There are many thought-provoking moments as well, like when Matsuko has to find ways to manage her family’s finances and the movie explores different aspects of Japanese culture, and how different cultures interact with each other to create harmony. Ultimately, it creates an enjoyable experience because of its honesty and humor.

The Cat Returns is praised for its attention to detail and imagination. Viewers get lost in a fantasy world of humanoid cats and unique designs but also learn important lessons about courage, friendship, and appreciating the simplicity of life. Each character is unique and allows viewers to connect to their individual quirks and ways of maneuvering. The animation is breathtaking, the music is satisfying, and the story really comes to life because of its memorable characters. Some have viewed the movie as too childish to be enjoyable and that there are no real stakes, it’s overly simplistic but the praises seem to outweigh the critiques here because of its compelling narrative and fantastical element that beats many other SG movies. If you’re like me and find cats adorable, this movie is a must-watch.

Pom Poko is an excellent movie, it does a great job of blending social commentary and comedy. The animation is smooth, with detailed designs and vibrant colors that bring each character to life. It tackles unique topics such as human-animal interaction, and environmental causes in a way that’s applicable to all ages. The likability of the characters makes it easy to root for them while they fight for their home. The soundtrack is extremely catchy and adds memorability to the overall experience. It can be difficult to develop a movie that appeals to both children and adults but Pom Poko does a decent job. Some think the movie doesn’t stand too tall compared to others in the Studio Ghibli catalog because it fails to tie together a moral/ethical significance. Nonetheless, it’s considered an enjoyable movie that has certainly earned its rating.

This movie is known for its vivid animation and beautiful visuals. This is likely a movie you will see in an aesthetic edit on TikTok. The movie follows a gifted aeronautical engineer who works on planes in WWII Japan. The film sets itself apart by blending fantasy with historical reality. The animation is one of my personal favorites because it’s so real and that is rarely seen in animated movies. Studio Ghibli’s well-known style is present throughout the entire movie. The stunning landscapes and complex character designs paired with enhanced music make the movie an immersive and memorable experience. It puts us on an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end and is consistent in its storytelling and attention to detail.

This movie is a timeless classic. It’s about a princess who must save her kingdom from a possible apocalyptic future. The animation is extremely detailed and colorful creating a beautiful world that will captivate your attention and imagination. The soundtrack is captivating as well with its enticing and haunting melodies that are consistent throughout the film. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is unique because it has themes of compassion and optimism in the face of adversity. The princess tries her best to protect both her people and the environment which is a message that holds true today as climate issues are at their climax. It can be difficult to find a movie that endures through the decades. The characters are written perfectly and while the movie is around 2 hours it doesn’t feel long in the slightest. All these elements combine not only to make it a classic but also one of the best animated movies ever created.

This film does an excellent job of being well-rounded. It combines comedy, adventure, fantasy, and drama. The story follows Arrietty and her family who must find a way to survive among humans. What makes this movie so special is its ability to relate to both children and adults. It has beautiful animation that captures the true essence of nature and has characters with genuine emotional depth where viewers can connect on personal levels. The music is heartwarming and adds extra emotion to each scene but what really makes this movie stand out is the life lessons it teaches. It celebrates imagination and lets us know that our actions have an impact on the world.

This is a heartwarming classic meant for all ages. The animation depicts the Italian countryside showing beautiful views of the ocean and mountains. The story is a humorous, emotional, but inspiring tale that leaves its viewers feeling hopeful. Porco Rosso has the perfect amount of tension and suspense as Porco is a bounty hunter who goes on dangerous missions to keep the Adriatic Sea safe. Viewers admire Porco’s character development and his journey to self-acceptance. The movie conveys an important message of upholding justice no matter how difficult the situation looks. It’s an engaging movie filled with beautiful scenery, emotion, and adventure: a well-rounded cinematic creation.

The Red Turtle is a wonderful movie. It maintains simplicity while incorporating a complex and meaningful story. The animation is beautifully detailed and vibrant with artfully crafted movements that give the movie a poetic element. The film speaks to the beauty of life’s simple moments and celebrates them through life’s hardships. The soundtrack captures the deep emotions the characters feel without being too overwhelming. There are strong themes between nature and our relationship to it and while it’s emotionally deep, it doesn’t take anything too seriously. The humor and drama are well-balanced and don’t take away from the overall impact. The movie has a quiet charm and leaves audiences in awe and with determination to overcome life’s challenges.

The aesthetic visuals and music work together to create a lighthearted yet contemplative atmosphere making it another timeless movie everyone should see. It offers an uplifting message about growing up which in today’s society is something every adolescent could use.

My Neighbor Totoro is considered one of the greatest animated movies of all time, which definitely earns it a spot in the top 10 of this list. The story follows two girls who move with their father to the countryside of Japan, a journey in a new environment which is made easier with their new friend Totoro who helps them adjust. It captures childhood in a unique way, there aren’t any antagonists or conflicts but just a celebration of the beauty of everyday life. The beautiful visuals and lush landscapes create a satisfying and relaxing experience. The characters are beautifully developed and memorable. While the typical action lovers may want conflict present in this movie or some type of action scene to take place, not everything has to contain high stakes to be an enjoyable experience.

The colorful imagery makes this movie stand out with its lush forests, valleys, and rolling hills. It captures the natural beauty of Earth with elements of magic. This movie is so special because of how it combines the whimsical and real, it’s both a lighthearted adventure with exciting action scenes and an exploration of difficult topics. It encourages its viewers to think beyond what they’ve been told is real which can be challenging for any age group. This movie can truly lead you into some type of spiritual journey!

The animation style is very unique and mixes beautiful visuals with powerful storytelling that resonates with the audience. There is a unique perspective on Japanese culture as well through its portrayal of marriage, career, and family. It’s one of the more low-key movies that gives that indie film festival energy. Only Yesterday is all about how our individual experiences change us over time, and how we can learn from our past experiences even as we keep moving forward with our lives. This is definitely a movie to watch if you’re looking for a memorable cinematic experience.

Sophie and Howl have their own unique personalities that get audiences invested in their victories and losses. There are themes of love, self-discovery, and loyalty explored in a powerful way. It conveys a message that no one should be afraid to be themselves, a timeless message. This is another timeless classic that resonates deeply with its viewers.

The movie provides relatable themes but still brings the fantasy element and is overall a timeless story.

We all know the story of Ponyo, the goldfish princess who befriends a little boy with whom she forms an inseparable bond. The animation of this movie is stunning, there are so many beautiful, vibrant colors that bring the story to life. Ponyo is the most lovable character there is, her story is full of warmth that truly resonates with the audience. It follows meaningful themes of love, loyalty, trust, and ocean conservation in a thoughtful way. This movie truly offers something for everyone and is a Studio Ghibli staple. Its simple, yet powerful narrative speaks to each individual differently and creates an overall enjoyable experience.

Spirited Away is another film considered to be one of the greatest animated films of all time mainly because of its captivating visuals, storytelling, and compelling themes. A major theme in this movie is environmentalism because the director wanted to emphasize the importance of not taking nature for granted. The movie does a great job of capturing the power of courage in life’s hardships as well. The main character, Chihiro, faces numerous obstacles but it’s her kindness that saves her from each situation. If that doesn’t speak to killing with kindness I’m not sure what does! Overall, everything blends together well to provide an unforgettable experience making it one of cinema’s most beloved films.

Princess Mononoke is a timeless classic that has captivated audiences since its release. The movie has been praised for its extremely detailed animation and intricate plot. It’s a story of morality and friendship, with beautiful visuals that capture the beauty of nature with its destruction. The music is essential to the movie as well as it provides an immersive experience and adds extra layers of depth. Overall, Princess Mononoke provides a compelling experience with action-adventure and important messages about our relationship with nature and each other.

At first, only Japanese audiences got to witness the return of Studio Ghibli on big screens when the newly produced film How Do You Live? (Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka) debuted on July 14, 2023. First announced on Twitter via the studio’s official profile, this new movie (which is promised to be the final Studio Ghibli presentation, sadly…) built up tons of intrigue as it landed in theaters without any trailers and promotional marketing whatsoever.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that when speaking to a Japanese magazine called Bungei Shunji, Studio Ghibli lead producer Toshio Suzuki had this to say about the decision to go that route for the movie’s Japanese launch – “As part of company operations, over the years Ghibli has wanted people to come see the movies we’ve made. So we’ve thought about that and done a lot of different things for that purpose — but this time we were like, ‘Eh, we don’t need to do that.”

It’s apparent that that sentiment isn’t shared with Studio Ghibli fans living in the States, however. A trailer for this anime blockbuster has been released for American audiences and those same moviegoers will get to see what all the hype is about now that this film (which has been renamed The Boy and the Heron) has been slated to hit American theaters on December 8, 2023. The plot of this movie is centered around a young boy named Mahito Maki (Santoki), who discovers an abandoned tower in his new town and ends up entering a fantastical realm that plays host to a talking grey heron.
